Alfa Romeo 147 replacement spied

Alfa Romeo is replacing the aged and dated 147 with something far more modern. Spied here in both mule and prototype form, the small hatch is undergoing testing.

Based upon the Fiat Bravo and Lancia Delta, the newcomer is expected to take front styling hints of the Kamal SUV rather than the Alfa Romeo 8C supercar. Towards the back, styling will resemble the Fiat Bravo, especially around the tail-lights and bootlid. Like its smaller sibling, MiTo, the "149" will have circular LED tail-lamps. While the Bravo is a elegant small family car and the Delta is a elegant small luxury hatchback, the Milano will be sporty. Steeply raked tail similar to Audi's A3, plus the addition of a small spoiler and twin exhausts will give the hatch a persona all of its own. In addition, the rear door handles could be hidden like the 147.

The name for the small family car is unknown, but the latest rumour suggests the name "Milano" instead of "149" and "940".

Power is expected to come from a 1.4 litre turbo petrol, 1.9 & 2.0 litre diesel units ranging from 120bhp to 250bhp. Hot versions, dubbed Milano GTA will get the Q2 diff to maximise traction.

Available in both 3 & 5 door bodystyles, the new Alfa is due to go on sale in Summer with prices starting at around £16,500. U.S sales are likely in 2010.
