GM recalls 12,662 2009 Cadillac CTS sedan's (U.S)

General Motors is recalling 12,662 2009 Cadillac CTS vehicles for a software problem that may disable the front passenger-side airbag.

"Under certain conditions, a software condition within the passenger-sensing system may disable the front passenger airbag when it should be enabled or enable it when it should be disabled," said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in its recall summary of the problem. "In a vehicle crash, if the front passenger airbag does not operate as designed, increased personal injury could occur."

In documents filed with NHTSA, GM said it became aware of the problem between 24th July and 23rd September, 2008, when four captured test fleet vehicles were reported to have the supplemental inflatable restraint readiness light illuminated and the passenger airbag status "off" light illuminated while the front passenger seat was occupied.

The recall will begin on 18th November. Cadillac dealers will reprogram the passenger-sensing system module for free. Owners can contact Cadillac at (866) 982-2339 for more information.

No international models have been affected.
