Spied: Subaru Forester

The third-generation of the Subaru Forester compact SUV has been spied testing on public roads for the very first time.

The new Forester, due in 2014, will sit on the same platform as the XV - itself underpins a modified Impreza platform – and as such, will borrow design cues off the compact crossover. Up front, the trapezoidal grille is partially disguised, while the greenhouse sees the A-pillars placed further forward for increased interior room.

The compact SUV will be a smidge longer than the current model, with longer overhangs. Judging by this prototype, the dashboard and controls is lifted out of its sister car, which helps cut development costs.

The European engine line-up is expected to be the same as the XV’s, with an entry-level 1.6 litre petrol, a 2.0 litre petrol engine and 2.0 litre diesel. The U.S and Japan may be offered a hybrid variant, although details about this particular model are scares.

The prototype's dashboard seems to be harbouring improved materials,
something that was criticised by motoring journalists.
