A prototype of the Ferrari California sports roadster was spied on video undergoing testing at the marque’s private test-track in Italy.
What makes this footage intriguing isn’t the disguise, it’s the noise emitted from the front-mounted engine, as it appears to be sporting a turbocharged powerplant.
One hypothesis suggests that this California is an engine mule regarding the development of two new powerplants for the next Maserati Quattroporte, including a turbocharged V8 and a supercharged V6. Both powerplants are said to be engineered by Ferrari, which would explain the California prototype.
The other may be that Ferrari will be offering a turbocharged or supercharged unit for the California successor, due in 2014.The last time Ferrari offered a turbocharged engine in a production model was in the F40 back in 1987.
It remains unclear if Ferrari would use the engines on its own vehicles.
