Say what: Nine-year-old steals EV at gun point

A nine-year-old boy held bystanders at gunpoint before stealing an electric car and embarking on a 19mph (30km/h) joyride in Western Sweden on Tuesday 26th June.

The youngster screamed “it’s loaded” as he pointed the gun at stunned onlookers who watched the boy trying to break into an EV parked near a block of flats in the Gothenburg suburb of Kortedala.

He abandoned his first attempt before moving onto another vehicle, in which he gained entry and sped off almost hitting a gardener who was working locally.

“From what I understand, they had a good overview of things and honked their horn so that other cars stopped when he came,” said Jan Jentzell of Poseidon, the property management firm which owned the car.

According to Jentzell, the boy continued to drive in the stolen car for about ten minutes before crashing at a roundabout.

He then tried fleeing the scene before being grabbed by an adult.

"It's unbelievable," Jentzell said. "I've never seen anything like it. It's also so tragic...he's so young."

The boy was turned over to social services who will decide what measures need to be taken. The gun used by the boy to threaten onlookers is believed to have been an air gun.
