Spy photos: 2013 Toyota Auris/Corolla and Auris/Corolla Hybrid

Toyota has begun testing the new shape Auris/Corolla hatchback in Europe.

Spied in the marque's new test facilities in Belgium, the new hatchback will be larger than the model it replaces, as it sits on a fresh chassis. Beneath the thick disguise, an aggressive fascia with angular headlights poke through.

The rear now features large vertical rear light clusters and a more shapely bumper. Current powertrains, transmissions, and bodystyles are expected to be carried over and as the new car will be lighter than the model it replaces, fuel consumption will be reduced alongside carbon emissions.

Rumour has it that a plug-in hybrid will be available at a later date to compete with the GM twins – Chevrolet Volt and Vauxhall/Opel Ampera.

Although the interior remains a mystery, it will feature Toyota's innovative Touch and Go multimedia system.

The newcomer is set to receive a new name when it launches in Europe in early 2013. It's said that the change to Auris left a sour taste in customer's mouth who knew and loved the Corolla nameplate.

The unnamed C-segment will still be built in the UK to cater for European markets.
