Spied: 2014 Mercedes C-Class

Development of the next-generation Mercedes C-Class is well under way as spy photographers have snapped another prototype undergoing cold-weather testing.

Despite the extensive cladding, the next C-Class is expected to adopt styling cues off the larger CLS coupé and will feature a smaller oval-shaped grille.

Aluminium construction will allow the compact executive sedan to be lighter, longer, and wider than the current model.

Although it's too early to anticipate powertrains, rumours suggest the new C-Class will be powered by three-cylinder, four-cylinder, and six-cylinder engines, some available with cylinder-deactivation technology. Petrol and diesel hybrid models may also be offered, all linked to an 27bhp (27PS/20kW) electric motor.

Launching in Spring 2014, production will be transferred to the U.S from Germany.
