Pictures of the 2014 Smart ForTwo test mules date back to late 2009 and we haven't seen any prototypes since, although, this is the first time the Renault sibling has been snapped.
Spied from a distance, the two mules wear a pre-facelift Twingo body, which has been dramatically reduced in length. Although the mules don't give away any details about the production models, the Renault City-car/Smart ForTwo footprint is clear to see. The third-generation ForTwo will be slightly longer and wider than current model but will retain its ultra-compact dimensions.
The Renault sibling of the ForTwo will slot below the 'larger' Twingo city-car and will compete with the Toyota iQ and Smart ForTwo. Both cars will remain rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive with a variety of petrol, diesel, and electric powertrains available, including Renault's new 0.9 litre TCE turbocharged petrol engine. These will be mated to an automated manual transmission, something that needs severe re-engineering to combat the jerkiness the current ForTwo suffers from.
The production models may be launched as early as 2014, with production commencing in France for both models.
