Honda has said that its new 2.2 i-CTDi will have CO2 emissions of 110g/km and should return 67mpg (4.2l/100km) when it's fitted into the new Civic, saving 29g/km over the previous engine. It produces 148bhp (150PS/110kW), which is 10bhp more than the current model, and 350Nm (258lb-ft) of torque.
The eye-opening figure is achieved by careful internal alterations such as revised oil channels to cut friction and aerodynamic finishes to the body. When mated to a manual transmission, the 'Idle Stop' system comes as standard and lets the car expel a hybrid-like 105g/km.
“To achieve a good CO2 figure, you need to optimise every aspect of the car,” says Honda engineer Katushi Watanabe. “Reducing the emissions was our key target and we're proud to say that we have achieved this without compromising the high-performance character of the engine,”. He concluded by saying “We want our customers to have fun when they drive this car.”
The new unit provides emissions similar to Volkswagen's 1.6 TDI and Ford 1.6 TDCi but has more power than the 2.0 litre units. Unlike the current model, the new Civic will only be offered as a five-door model when it goes on sale early next year.
